New Computer

After the disappointment of Macworld, I cheered myself up slightly by buying a new computer! I’ve been meaning to get a new Mac for a while now, since my current is a PowerBook G4 that’s over-used and in need of a break. I decided to buy the iMac. I thought long and hard about the decision. I weighed up the pros and cons of each Mac computer and eventually the iMac won.

Why?

Let me explain, from my reasoning. I was first tempted by a MacBook, which is incredibly cheap and could just be used until I decide I want something better. However, I want a decent graphics card for my gaming (Mac user who games? Surely not…) and so a better machine was in order. The MacBook Pro perhaps? With the style of my current notebook and so much faster. It has a decent enough graphics card, too. If you compare it to the iMac, however, it doesn’t quite reach it. The graphics card is better (I’ve checked), the hard drive space of the iMac is awesome and.. well.. it looks pretty.

I could have gone for the Mac Pro but I’ll be upgrading my iMac in two years to a new machine anyway - I couldn’t see me actually buying and installing upgrades for a Mac Pro. Also, I’m not earning any money, so there’s no way I would want to dish out that much for a computer at the moment.

The Specs

I’m quite happy with the iMac I’ve ordered. It won’t be coming until the 23rd of January (estimated delivery date) but this is what I have to look forward to:

  • 2.33Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
  • 2GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB
  • 750GB HDD
  • 24-inch TFT display
  • 8x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD±RW, CD-RW)
  • AirPort Extreme
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR

And there we have it! The full specs of my new computer, I’m really looking forward to it. All for £1,789.53 (I bought AppleCare too). Some of my exams start next week, so it’s something to look forward to after they finish.

Awesome! Make sure you upload some pics of it when it comes.
You’ll be loving the 24″ goodness for sure. :)

I will, zzap! I’ll take some pics of it boxed and then as I set it up. The problem being I’m in University and student houses never look good. My room is no different - so don’t laugh at my set up!

Hmm, ok, I’ll try not to laugh. But can’t make any bets. :P

Hey, are you planning to sell your old PowerBook G4? And is it in really bad condition?

I wouldn’t say it’s in bad condition, really. It’s just used. It has a scratch on the casing next to the trackpad which has unfortunately oxidised and makes it look a little black.

I have no plans to sell it at the moment, as I take it up to campus to do my work on in lectures.

I am intending to get a new MacBook / MacBook Pro this summer though - so I guess I may sell this one later on this year. Although, I’ll find it very hard as it was my first Mac and.. well.. maybe that’s a bit too sentimental of me.
